It's Time for Another Good Idea, Bad Idea

Good Idea: Staying hydrated.

Bad Idea: Holding a cup full of ice water, whilst leaning over to pick something up.

Good Idea: Showering regularly.

Bad Idea: Showering while all of your towels are drying in the dryer.

Good Idea: Removing a dead scorpion from the church building.

Bad Idea: Not watching where you're walking while taking care of said scorpion and exposing your bare toes to an alive scorpion. (My friend saved me with her screaming)

Good Idea: Quickly going to the bathroom at work so that coworkers don't have to wait in line for too long.

Bad Idea: Going to the bathroom so quickly at work that your coworkers can see your fly down.

And now for a stroll down memory lane. Here's a clip from the Animaniacs, who first introduced me to good idea, bad idea:

Meet TC

She is gifted.  She can't stay in her seat. She keeps me on my toes each and every day. She is the student I mentioned on my birthday that gave me coupons for her to be quiet for 5 minutes. Since then, she told me that they are reusable and they don't expire until May. That was the best news I'd heard all week.

I had a dream that I was teaching and the lights went off. I thought to myself, I can't believe the lights turned off! It must be because TC is absent. The district recently installed motion sensors in all of our classrooms (which I personally think is not going to save any money) and if nobody moves for 5 minutes, it goes dark. This has yet to happen, but I promised my class an extra recess if they manage this feat. Maybe if I tell them it happened in my dream, they'll be more motivated to stay in their seats.

The best part about this dream is what triggered it. The day before, TC had gotten out of her seat at least 8 times before the morning announcements were even over. I finally told her to glue her bottom to her chair. So what happened next? I watched her literally glue her bottom to her chair. A few kids came up to my desk to tell me what had happened and waited to see how I would handle the situation. What can you do when a student does exactly what you asked her to do? Not much. So I did nothing. She soon realized it wasn't such a good idea and cleaned up the mess.

Priorities

So, this "dream blog" isn't turning out how I planned it. I didn't account for the fact that I can't control when I remember my dreams and when I don't. The only dream I've had recently was one where I was happy because someone had emptied my trash for me. I only figured it out it was a dream because the trash is still full. So, from now on I guess that most of my posts will be real.

Tonight my roommate's 7 year old neice came over and we had a nice little chat, which opened my eyes up a little more to how children see the world. She told me that she wants to be in Mrs. Compton's class next year because "her class is closest to the bathrooms." Haha!

My class isn't the closest to the bathrooms, but I do have one unfair advantage over the other teachers. The kids always tell me how cool my classroom is and when I ask them why, I always think they'll comment on my cool bulletin boards or something else I put a lot of time and energy into. But, in reality, they say it's because none of the other rooms have flat screen TVs in them.

Birthday Magic

[real life]

Yesterday was my birthday. It was a day full of magical things.

As I was driving to work, I was listening to Norah Jones. Norah and I were singing "Sunrise" and I was thoroughly enjoying myself. Then at the very same second the song ended, I watched the sun rise over the top of the mountain right before my eyes! It was incredible! Of course, I had to drive the rest of the way with the sun shining in my eyes, but it was totally worth it for that magical moment.

Other magical things in my day included (but are not limited to):
  • attaining a new high score in both skateboarding and hula hooping on the Wii fit
  • receiving a bracelet from one of my students that totally matched the outfit I was wearing
  • getting 2 coupons for 5 minutes of "zipping it" from my most talkative student
  • free dinner at Joe's BBQ
  • not one, but two holes in one while miniature golfing. Boo ya!
It's going to be a great year!

Beiber Fever and Imaginary Friends

[real life]

JD: "Miss Jones! Last night I called Justin Bieber on the phone and he said that he'd save 5 tickets for me for his concert!"

Me: "How did you get Justin Bieber's phone number?"

JD: "I just looked it up. I think I'm going to take _____ and _____ and _____ and _____ and you can come too if you want!"

The best part is that she actually thinks that she talked to him. :)

Later that same day, I went to my desk and discovered a note. It said:

TURN OVER

So, I followed the directions and this is the letter that I found:

Dear Miss Jones,
Please don't step on the floor by my desk because I have a imaginary friend that is named Sacachowea. She will get mad.
Your Student,

CR
Take note that he used four out of five parts of a friendly letter and he remembered to indent the body. I couldn't have been more proud. :)

Can you spare a square?

In my family, if you run out of t.p. in the bathroom, you have to sing a special song in order to get someone to bring you a new roll. I always thought that my uncles had made up the song, but I recently heard someone else talking about it and was very disappointed to find out that they didn't make it up at all. My mom just thought they did. It's called "Stranded." If you want me to sing it for you sometime, I'd be more than happy to.

Anyway, I think that is enough background knowledge. Now for my dream. I was stranded. Rather than singing the stranded song, I just asked the two nearest people to help me out. One of those people happened to be a man. I'm not sure what a man was doing around since I was in a public restroom, but nonetheless, he was there. Both the man and the woman responded to my request. The man gave me a whole roll of toilet paper. The woman gave me two squares. Two! That's it?! Really? And that's it for my dream. Really.
